A Welcome Garden Transformation
After years of living with a front yard that consisted of a large, dying tree and a random assortment of azaleas, the homeowners of this 1890s home decided to turn their attention to the exterior landscape, which was a poor complement to the elegance of their interiors.
The “bones” of this Old House Loves transformation began with hardscapes. The dated cement walkway in disrepair was replaced with classic bluestone, and the original porch woodwork -- stripped away by prior owners -- was restored to highlight the home's charm and historic architecture.
The next layer was softscapes. With the home located on a corner lot at a busy intersection, the landscape had to deliver both privacy and noise abatement. Old House Loves solved both problems by creating a garden room within the front yard. Visitors enter the "room" from an entrance flanked by scuptural Crape Myrtles, from which extend layers of shrubs, perennials, and ornamental grasses that wrap the front and side property lines. Across the front of the home, a formal boxwood hedge gives the home a stately look, and plays beautifully with the mix of looser, graceful plantings within.
